Maya Miyao (宮 (みや) 尾 (お) 摩 (ま) 夜 (や) , Miyao Maya^?) is a supporting character in Witch Watch series.

She's a witch known as a Shape-Shifting Witch (変 (へん) 身 (しん) の魔 (ま) 女 (じょ) , Henshin no Majo^?) and Nemu's mother.

Etymology

• The name Maya means "chafe/rub/polish/grind/scrape" (摩) (ma) and "night/evening" (夜) (ya).
• Maya's surname Miyao means "temple/shrine/palace" (宮) (miya) and "tail/ridge" (尾) (o).

Appearance

Maya is a woman of average height. She wears several dresses and a shawl over them, a necklace with seven garlands, and earrings with garlands ending in an irregular shape with several points. Maya has shoulder-length hair with several strands in front of her shoulders, and on her forehead, she has several strands of hair that are a different color than her normal hair color.

Personality

Maya takes her work as a witch seriously, keeping it a complete secret, so she was strict with Nemu about never getting close to others. Despite this, Maya has proven to be kind to others and caring about her family.

Despite her strict personality, she has a soft spot for cats. She owns one and spends hours petting it.

History

After the Miyao family was no longer so open about being a family of witches, Maya would begin to perform magical works as a secret family business working for certain special clients.

Maya loves her cat Juliano, whom she often squeezes his cheeks because he is so cute.

Nemu Miyao

Maya was distant from Nemu since she was little because she wanted her to be independent during her training. Despite this, Maya loves Nemu and wants the best for her, but she tends to be overprotective of her.

Abilities

• Transformation Magic: Unlike Nemu, Maya can transform into any person she's shaken hands with, making a perfect copy of that person. However, she can only copy appearances, not personality, so she must work hard to avoid arousing suspicion among the person's acquaintances.

• Magic Wand: Like all witches, Maya owns her own wand, which holds a magic stone within.

Trivia

• Maya would debut in chapter 23 being mentioned by Nemu although her full appearance would not be revealed until chapter 59. However, her name would not be revealed until chapter 203.
  • In the anime, Maya would make her appearance in the second ending called Hide And Seek With The Moon.
