Taiga Kai (甲 (か) 斐 (い) 大 (たい) 河 (が) , Kai Taiga^?) is a supporting character in Witch Watch series.

He was a kappa and a friend of Kuon, Reiji, Ibuki and Kakuraibo. He died 20 years ago on a mission to prevent Jura's resurrection.

Etymology

• The name Taiga means "large/big" (大) (tai) and "river" (河) (ga).
• Taiga's surname Kai means "armor/carapace" (甲) (ka) and "beautiful/patterned" (斐) (i).

Appearance

Taiga is a tall and muscular man, he has his head shaved on both sides leaving his hair long on top of his head, his hair ends at the back of his head tied in a ponytail, he wears a long shirt with torn sleeves and a long dark tight shirt underneath highlighting his muscles, he wears long boots, uses a rope as a belt and has a pearl necklace (which Kuon would later use to honor his memory).

According to his character profile, Taiga still has shell remains on his back.

Personality

Taiga is portrayed as a curious and naive person who is surprised and excited to meet the tengu and ogre familiars. Taiga is a good person and a born mediator, preventing Kakuraibo and Reiji from causing trouble during the trip. He's kind, intelligent and sociable but will take things seriously if he must.

History

Taiga was born into a family of Kappas. He was raised by his grandfather who lived deep in the forest away from humans. Some time later, his grandfather would die alone in the forest, this event made Taiga realize that he did not want to die the same way, so from that moment on he would decide to leave the forest and surround himself with more people.

Taiga would be chosen along with Kuon, Kakuraibo, Reiji and Ibuki for a mission in which they had to prevent the resurrection of Jura. What happened to Taiga on that mission is currently unknown.

Despite the short time together, Taiga would begin to think of Kuon as a little brother.

Abilities

• Water Magic: Taiga has the ability to control water at will.
  • Dragon Cascade: Taiga summons a large waterfall which he can control at will and direct it at whomever he wants.
  • Waterlily Waves: Taiga throws streams of water at the enemy.
• Sumo: Taiga is a master of sumo, which is a kappa skill. This is because he has great strength, which he uses in sumo so he cannot be easily moved or hurt.
• Back Hardening: Being a kappa, Taiga has the ability to harden the skin on his back for a short period of time, which helps protect him from lethal blows.

Trivia

• Taiga would be indirectly mentioned by Kuon in chapter 159 before his official appearance, in chapter 165, his name and appearance would be revealed to finally reveal his full name in chapter 179.
